In the southern suburbs, there are numerous chapels to explore (check out the list of the most beautiful ones we have found here). All it takes is a sense of curiosity and discovery. Yet, in our view, it is the small chapels situated by or even on the sea that truly captivate, whether due to their scenic locations, idyllic landscapes, or their Cycladic color schemes. Here, we have compiled and are delighted to present to you the most beautiful and picturesque seaside chapels stretching from Piraeus to Sounio.
Panagia Kataklyftiotissa, Palea Fokea
The azure waters blending with the white and blue chapel form a Cycladic landscape that transports you on a journey. The Panagia Kataklyftiotissa in Palea Fokea is unquestionably one of the most beautiful seaside chapels in Attica, not solely due to its stunning location. Upon stepping inside, you will be pleasantly surprised as traditional icons on the walls are replaced by forms evoking the sensation of wind, skillfully painted by the renowned artist Dimitris Mytaras.
Agios Petros, Sounio
On one side, the Temple of Poseidon, and on the other, the emerald waters of Sounio. Wherever you look, when you find yourself on the rock on which the chapel of Agios Petros in Sounio is built, you will see something that will impress you and make you not know where to turn your gaze first. Below the chapel, there is also the homonymous beach where it is worth taking a dip in the calm and crystal clear waters, either before or after your visit to the chapel. In its exterior, it has a small colorful garden, which is another reason why many choose it for weddings or baptisms.
Agios Nikolaos, Vouliagmeni
The chapel of Agios Nikolaos in Vouliagmeni, although relatively unknown to most, is arguably the most unique chapel in the southern region. Upon viewing it, one feels transported to a place reminiscent of Tibet. Situated on a ‘secret’ path constructed in 1947 on a rock, just past the Nautical Club of Vouliagmeni, this chapel sits right at the edge of the sea. Legend has it that a fisherman painstakingly transported materials by boat every morning to enable the construction of this piece of art over the years. A marble slab next to the metal door bears the inscription: “Agios Nikolaos. Owner Nik. Xenos painter sculptor 1947”.
Agios Nikolaos, Anavyssos
Perched on the rocks, offering a breathtaking view of the sea, the chapel of Agios Nikolaos in Anavyssos is truly picturesque. Recently restored following a destructive explosion at the Monastery by unknown individuals in 2005, which resulted in the destruction of frescoes, the entrance, and other parts of the temple. This chapel is part of the parish of Agioi Theodoroi in Anavyssos and celebrates the feast day of the Saint on December 6th with a festive Vespers and Divine Liturgy.
Situated on the small rocks within the Aphrodite Cove in the stunning bay of Peiraiki, stands a tiny chapel that serves as a hallmark of the area. Painted in pure white with a small blue dome, this chapel is a popular subject for photography, particularly among the locals of Piraeus. Paired with the small boats docked nearby in the harbor, it imparts an island-like ambiance to the urban landscape of Piraeus and provides a picturesque setting to witness the sunset. Further along, the iconic Cross of Peiraiki stands tall, adding to the charm of the surroundings.
