Although you can find many beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters and white sandy shores along the Athens coastline to Sounio, there are three more options that are within a short distance and offer equally beautiful scenery. We are talking about Poseidonia Beach, Asimaki Beach, and Pounda Zeza, three beaches worth traveling a few extra kilometers to visit – especially if you are looking for quieter places, without the hustle and bustle of the more famous spots.
Note that all three of them are ideal choices for day trips with friends, as well as for a family beach day, as they have shallow waters and plenty of space for playing in the sand. In the end, we will also recommend some places for good food to make this necessary stop on the way back.
Poseidonia
Poseidonia Beach is located just after Sounio and is the beach of the homonymous settlement, where many holiday homes are also located. The beach is dominated by sandy shores, the waters are relatively shallow (making it suitable for family outings with children), and it has some sunbeds in case you want to sit somewhere more organized. However, the majority of the beach is unorganized, so you can bring your own umbrella and beach mat and set up wherever you prefer.
To get there, you have to cover some kilometers. Coming from the coastal road, Poseidonia Beach is located at the 60th kilometer of the Athens-Sounio road. Passing by the Temple of Poseidon, you will continue a bit further on the main road until you see signs to turn.
Asimaki Beach
Asimaki Beach is located right after Poseidonia Beach and offers equally beautiful waters, with delightful sandy shores and relative tranquility. Here you will come if you are looking for a more peaceful spot, away from the crowds. The waters are quite shallow and ideal for family situations and games, while you can also freely play rackets, beach volleyball, or whatever else you desire. If you want shade, make sure to bring your own umbrella and get ready for endless dives and lounging on the beach.
The beach is also located at the 60th kilometer of the Athens-Sounio road. It belongs to the Asimaki complex but is accessible to anyone else who wishes to visit.
Pounta Zeza
Just before reaching Lavrio, you will find Pounta Zeza, one of the most picturesque beaches in Attica, which will remind you of a scene from an island as it is nestled in a beautiful cove. In the back part of the beach, there are tamarisk trees under which you can spread your towel and enjoy a relaxing swim in the clear waters. If you prefer something more organized, the beach also has a section where you can find umbrellas and sunbeds. It is ideal for families, as children can play safely in the shallow waters.
You can approach the beach either coming from the coastal road or through Lavrio. You will find the necessary signs to guide you.
Where to eat on your way back home
Taking the road back, you will find many options for dining, some right by the sea, others tucked away in the streets a bit further from the coastal road. The closest and good choice is the Syrtaki or Vallis restaurant in Sounio for seafood dishes and a wonderful view. Alternatively, it’s worth making a stop at Legrena, where you can find Theodoros and Eleni, Marida, and Stamatis, which have been offering quality options for years. If you want to be closer to Athens, then Kalamia in Lagonissi offers fresh fish right by the waves.
If you just want to make a shorter stop, let’s say for ice-cream, you can go to Amarantos in Saronida or Allora in Lagonissi. A bit closer to Athens (on your way back to the city centre), Waffle House in Vouliagmeni remains a solid choice for good ice cream with a sea view.
