A trip to Athens can not be complete without a visit to its coast. Just a few kilometers from the city center, the “Athens Riviera” offers many dining options, dozens of beaches and great spots where you can enjoy the sunset. Here is a list of the best spots:
Sounion
Sounion, despite being the farthest spot on our list, has the most beautiful sunset in the southern suburbs, perhaps in the whole of Athens. With the Temple of Poseidon in the foreground and the sun diving in the blue of the sea, the sunset here combines the charm of Ancient Greece and the beauty of Greek nature in a single image.
Laimos Vouliagmenis
Laimos in Vouliagmeni is considered to be the “star” of the Athens Riviera due to its distinctive location and geographic shape, and it offers one of the most beautiful sunsets in the south. Locals are well aware of this. Here, nature paints the sun’s departure in the most incredible colors. Choose one of the cafe-restaurants or just take a seat on a rock and enjoy the view; it is certain that you will not regret it.
Kavouri
An afternoon stroll on the pedestrian street of Kavouri, Vouliagmeni, is worth the trouble – and then some. After all, the street that passes in front of Mikro Kavouri beach is not called “Iliou Street” (“Sun Street”) for no reason. Whether you watch the sunset from a bench, from the canteens in Megalo Kavouri or the fish taverns in Mikro Kavouri, the view will be nothing less than magical.
Flisvos Marina
Go for a run, skate or walk on the promenade of Faliro and, just before sunset, make sure to have reached Flisvos Marina. There, against the backdrop of sailing boats and the vastness of the sea, with an ice cream cone in hand, take a seat on the benches and simply enjoy the irresistible view.
SNFCC
At the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, you will enjoy one of the most magical sunsets of Athens. Against the backdrop of the iconic building, you can relax with a beer or coffee, walking along the canal, or you can climb to the top of the National Opera, at the SNFCC Lighthouse, which offers a 360° panoramic view of Athens, Piraeus and the Saronic Gulf.
